The Wikipedia article on Dell Precision Workstations is also an actually useful and well-researched resource:

Here's one generally reliable source for model years for Dell computers: don't quote me on this) the T7700 series.
#Dell precision 490 intel xeon 5150 series
The overall design for this case series was fielded in two form factors: a smaller case (such as used in the 390, 490, T3500 and T5500) and a much larger (and heavier) case such as used in the Precision 690 and (I think. The 490 traces to a release sometime in 2006, whereas the T5500 traces back to 2009, just to put the numbers out there.ĭell stayed with the same case styling for their Precision line workstations for a number years because the design was a successful one on a number of levels, and because it made economic sense to not have to design a new case. They do share many aspects of case design, but the T-series are much more capable machines when it comes to speed, processing power, and upper limits of expandability. The 490 series uses an earlier generation of Xeon hardware and an earlier motherboard and support chipset than does the T5500 (or any of the rest of the T-series). I don't mean to be rude, but that's not quite true. I do know the T5500 works well with this card, can't vouch for the earlier machines. Reports all from users of Microsoft operating systems. One of the things I'm seeing as I research this is an alleged incompatibility between BIOS motherboards and the more modern Nvidia adapters. I didn't get to look at the box for my daughter's card this morning (got home very late after work), so I looked up the info on from when I bought it (finally remembered I could do that.) I'm not so familiar with the Vostro line, but those I've worked on I'm not so keen on. Very serviceable machines, and blazing fast Xeon processors, with capability to support multiple video adapters. If the 490 is not fast enough, look at a T5500 or T7700. Quote from: horusfalcon on August 22, 2018, 05:15:26 PM This is probably personal taste more than anything, but I have a strong preference for Precision Workstations. Some even come with a GT 620 like the one I just got the other day for a family member. The I3 and I5 CPU are both faster then your current CPU. Both have BIOS updates for the spectre and meltdown flaws available and it has faster ram then your current one and the CPU built in GPU is faster then your old video card.

A example for a used computer would be a Dell Vostro 270 or Dell Vostro 470. Īnother option is to just buy a newer computer.

If you have a power supply that is at least a 350W or more powerful then a GT 730 or GT 740 is a option as well.
#Dell precision 490 intel xeon 5150 upgrade
The all use about the same power as your old video card and are safe to upgrade to. Gt 610 is one of the oldest I use in a few old computers but has no compatible problems.GT 710 and GT 720 are some I use in other computers and they work fine as well. Just about any card from the 500, 600 or 700 series that your power supply meats the requirements for should be way faster then your current one. I heard about a few old systems having compatible problems with the PCIE Gen 3 cards that are found in the Nvidia 700 series and newer but that is rare. I looked up your video card info and it looks like just about anything would be faster then it.
